Wellbeing Guidance and Resources for Social Care

Evidence suggests there are 5 steps you can take to improve your mental health and wellbeing. Trying these things could help you feel more positive and able to get the most out of life.

Check in, Check out

Working in care is emotionally demanding in ways that do not always show up on a rota. Check in, Check out is a simple daily practice to help you bookend your shift – a few minutes to notice how you are doing, acknowledge what you have been part of and step away from work with more intention.

Reflect on your day

Name three things that went well. Acknowledge what was hard, without judging yourself for it.

It is okay to ask for help

Be proud of the work you did today. If you are struggling, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Check in with your colleagues

Ask how someone is doing and really listen. The people around you may be carrying more than they let on.

Mark the end of your working day

Choose something small that tells your mind the shift is done – a walk, a change of clothes, a cup of tea. Then rest.

Reflection…

Difficult experiences do not always land straight away. Sometimes the weight of what you have witnessed surfaces later – in your mood, your sleep or how you feel about your work. The signs below are worth knowing, and worth taking seriously.
